Koolduct is the Only Choice for James Paget Hospital
03/11/2003
The strong but lightweight qualities of Kingspan Koolduct, the latest in ducting technology, provided the perfect treatment for a major project at James Paget healthcare NHS trust which is a district general hospital in Gorleston, near Great Yarmouth.
The 520-bed hospital provides acute and community healthcare for a population of 220,000 in the Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Waveney areas. It was named after eminent local 19th century surgeon Sir James Paget who was appointed Surgeon Extraordinary by Queen Victoria.
It was primarily the weight saving benefits of the Kingspan Koolduct System that made it the preferred ducting system for the refurbishment of the hospital's intensive care unit.
The old ducting was replaced by Aluzinc clad Kingspan Koolduct in a roof top application as well as in the plant room. This lightweight solution meant the building did not have to undergo expensive re-engineering work in order to support much heavier sheet metal ducting.
The Kingspan Koolduct was installed by Environair Systems who worked closely with mechanical engineers Integrated Building Services Design Partnership. As the installation of the Kingspan Koolduct system had to be carefully synchronised with other contractors on site, Environair pre-fabricated the system so that the Koolduct was delivered ready for installation.
Robert Clarkeson, of Integrated Building Services Design Partnership, who specified the ducting system, said: 'The weight considerations meant that there was a need to use exterior ducting that would minimise loads on the roof.
'This made Koolduct the preferred option, but there were other advantages in using the system such as its impressive overall performance and the fact that it was manufactured off-site and came ready assembled.'
Kingspan Koolduct is constructed from Kooltherm CFC-free rigid phenolic insulation panels faced with reinforced aluminium foil on both sides. Unlike traditional sheet metal ducting, which needs to be lagged with insulation as a second operation, Koolduct provides a single fix fast track installation with no lagging required.
A CFC/HCFC-free version with zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) is also available. Kingspan Insulation has announced that, from January 1st, 2004, Kingspan Koolduct will have zero ODP as standard.
Other benefits of Kingspan Koolduct's 'complete system technology' that enhance its appeal to specifiers are the product's extremely low level of air leakage and superior insulating properties, which can result in electrical consumption savings. In addition, the air stream in the system's sealed duct flows only across aluminium and has no contact with any loose fibres, making it ideal for use in hospitals, food and processing industries, the pharmaceutical industry and anywhere else where fibrous products are not acceptable.
As well as being CFC-free, rigid phenolic insulation offers several further advantages, including excellent fire resistance with negligible smoke emission and first class moisture resistance.
