Kingspan insulation for showcase Eco-Refurbishments

16/12/2010

Kingspan Kooltherm premium performance insulation has been used in a Sheffield City Council housing refurbishment scheme, which has set out to transform four ordinary small terraced dwellings into beacons for affordable, sustainable modern living.

Following consultation with the local community in Page Hall, an area of Sheffield comprising 500 tightly packed, mixed tenure terraces, Sheffield City Council identified that one of their key regeneration priorities should be to encourage individuals to invest in the properties that they owned and developed a strategy to show what could be achieved with small, pre-1919, solid wall construction terraced houses to bring about: “a step-change in the way properties are refurbished”.

Dave Hardwick Senior Architectural Assistant at Sheffield City Council explained “We refurbished four empty properties, creating three different refurbishment schemes: The Eco Terrace; The 21st Century Terrace; and Twice the Terrace and insulation from the Kingspan Kooltherm K-range was used on all three properties.”

“Exterior insulation was out of the question as the terraces are straight on to the pavement. However, interior room space was an issue in the small terraced houses, and Kingspan Kooltherm products were selected as they achieved the U-values we wanted with minimum thickness.”

“We had used Kingspan before; and had a comprehensive range of literature about the company’s products and chose Kooltherm because we knew it to be a versatile product with easy workability. We also knew that Kooltherm was readily available to members of the public who might be inspired to carry out their own insulation works.”

Just 62.5 mm Kooltherm K18 Insulated Plasterboard was sufficient to achieve the required U-value of 0.30 W/m2.K for the walls of both the 21st Century Terrace and in Twice the Terrace, without impinging excessively on the limited internal space.

Kingspan Kooltherm K7 Pitched Roof Board was used in the roof of these properties: In Twice the Terrace, the sloping soffits to the attic bedroom had 100 mm Kooltherm K7 Pitched Roof Board installed between the rafters, which were then dry-lined with 37.5 Kooltherm K18 Insulated Plasterboard. 140 mm Kooltherm K7 Pitched Roof Board in 2 layers achieved a U-value of 0.16 W/m2.K for the dormer and attic roof areas.

For the 21st Century house the sloping soffits to the attic bedroom were treated slightly differently with 125 mm Kooltherm K7 Pitched Roof Board between the rafters, under-drawn with 12.5 mm fireliner board and skim.
